The core loop involves managing your party's jobs and abilities outside of battle, then strategically positioning and commanding them during grid-based tactical encounters to achieve victory.
Is the Job System complicated? While deep, it's intuitive once you grasp the basics. You assign a primary job to each character, and as they fight in that job, they earn Job Points (JP) to unlock its abilities. You can also set a secondary job or abilities learned from other jobs, allowing for immense customization. Experimentation is key!
What happens if a character dies in battle? If a character's HP reaches zero, they are knocked out. You have 3 turns (where other units take actions) to revive them using specific abilities or items. If you fail to revive them within those 3 turns, they are permanently lost (often referred to as "dead" or "crystallized"). This adds significant stakes to every battle.
Is the game really that hard? Final Fantasy Tactics is known for its challenging difficulty, especially for newcomers to the TRPG genre. Early battles can be punishing if you're unprepared, and some story battles are notoriously tough. However, mastering the Job System, understanding terrain advantages, and careful unit positioning will lead to victory. The challenge is part of its enduring appeal.
